As we approached the pristine mountain lake, we first paused to see what action we could detect through the clear, icy water. Fish were feeding below the surface and would occasionally cruise into the shallows to eat. I rigged my 4-weight and tied on a trusted mayfly pattern. A nice fish was working his way into the shallows so I cast a few feet ahead of him. The disruption caused by the beadhead splashing the glassy surface scared him and he turned to swim away, then out of the corner of his eye he noticed my fly and darted back around to inhale it. A beautiful wild Yellowstone Cutthroat about 16". Not a monster, but the surroundings and the beauty of the fish made the experience very memorable.
